All swimming pools may soon need to be registered in Victoria as part of a plan to reduce backyard drowning.
An online swimming pool register is in operation in New South Wales.
Bill McArthur, president of the Municipal Association of Victoria, said it had been lobbying for a pool register for some time.
He called on the state to now pay for inspectors to ensure pool met safety requirements.
